1935 Marx, Uncle Wiggily, He Goes A Ridin' in Original Box

1935 Marx, Uncle Wiggily, He Goes A Ridin' in Original Box

Marx "eccentric auto" featuring the famous Uncle Wiggily character. One of Marxs' most lavishly detailed "eccentric auto's" it has a mechanical motor with attached key and is all lithographed tinplate. It also grades as one of the highest examples I've seen; excellent+ to near mint. It also comes with its difficult to find original box.

Similar to the other Marx "eccentric auto's" the car turns randomly in every direction while the driver's head rotates counter-clockwise in ¼ turn increments. A metal tab protruding from the rear trunk acts as a pivot point enabling the vehicle to do occasional "wheelies". Probably the most important manufacturing aspect of the toy are its lithographed arms. As you can see the arms are lithoed onto the sides of the body. Before the release of this toy all eccentric auto's had separate, three-dimensional metal arms.

The toy has Uncle Wiggily holding a large Easter basket filled with colored eggs. Additional bushels of colored eggs decorate the top panels front hood and rear trunk. The sides of the car are covered with detailed illustrations from the Uncle Wiggily stories. Mice, a pig, goose, opossum (Dr. Possum), goat, dog (Jackie Bow Wow), and a pig all dressed in human clothing embellish the sides of the vehicle. Facial portraits of these characters were also lithoed onto the sides of the wheels. The Uncle Wiggily copyright is located just in front of the windshield.

The toy works beautifully. The coiled spring motor is strong, easily wound, and smoothly unwound.

The box features an accurate illustration of the toy. The Uncle is shown in an upright wheelie position to protect himself from the mean old Woozy Wolf. The toy name, address, and copyright also appear on this panel. Two side panels show some of Uncle Wiggily's feathery friends. The remaining two endflaps include the toy name, manufacturer name and address, and the famous Marx credo "have you all of them".
